Global Access  August 2006

Global Access 2006: Global Aspect Triad No.6 - Middle East, Inks and Dealing in an e-environment. This month, we shall examine the sixth of our ten 'Global Aspect Triads'; three ways of looking at the world of opportunity from a uniquely dealer perspective via our monthly selection of a geographical region, a product/service sector and a business management advisory. 1) Geographical region: Middle East, has found it's niche in the global print supply chain and whereas it is not replete with manufacturers it has become a leading investor in up to-date print technology and quality print production. Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates in particular, have been making major investments. For example, UAE has announced the opening of an International Media Production Zone (www.impz.ae), a 3P (printing, publishing and packaging) hub which has the aim of becoming a focus for advanced print production technology. Sources of Middle Eastern information include Print Link (covering 15,000 companies and approx 40,000 readers in 20 ME countries) & MEPrinter (7,000 readers in 13 ME countries). Trade shows include Gulf Print 2007 (Dubai) and 3Ps 2006 (Kuwait). 2) Product / service sector: Inks, Ink and paper (together with machinery and people) are the prerequisites for any print job. Ink formulations and applications are changing (as analog changes to digital) but the dealer can remain firmly positioned in the value chain. Dealer supported ink color mixing centers based upon their knowledge and understanding of print technology; offer a real added value service potential when added to their ability to offer time sensitive colour matching to suit & support local production deadlines. 3) Business Management Advisory: Dealing in an e-environment: the growth of 'e-with everything' has significant benefits for the dealer. Benefits arrive directly via ease of access to people, data and 24/7/365 information. Dealers who are able to merge the strengths and potential of Knowledge Leverage (customers, markets, suppliers, technology) with Market Connection (online ordering and job management) with Strategic Management (effective use of technology); have a bright future, whatever the 'e-climate' Danny Moloney MBA, written August 2006
